[CHEMISTRY | Week #5] The Chemistry of Color + Nutrition
Colors of Food in My Diet
I was traveling this past week, so did not have the opportunity to explore the colors of food in my kitchen. However, I was able to document the color of food in my diet while traveling and was surprised (and somewhat ashamed) at the outcome. I ate out everyday of the week and noticed that a majority of my meals consisted of carbs, proteins, oils and very little vegetables and fruits. Most of my meals fell into the red, orange, yellow and sometimes green categories and consisted of what I call "dead" foods (i.e.: meat and processed foods with preservatives. In relation to the chakra system, many of the foods in my diet this week are associated with the last four chakras (i.e.: root, sacral, solar, and heart); an abundance of fire, vitality, and intensity. My mood this past week definitely reflected those emotions. I felt anxious, creative, and a little on edge. I'd like to experiment in the future and see how a change in color in my diet will be reflected in my emotions.
Engineered Insect Meat + The Impossible Burger
I can see how engineering insect meat can be a solution to alleviate problems related to reducing greenhouse gasses from cattle and global food shortages. However engineering more food in a lab is a band-aid approach to systemic issues related to global warming and the distribution of wealth in relation to food access. Why make food in a lab when we can educate people in how to grow their own food or place pressure on the meat industry to lessen production of cattle. Engineering insect meat in a lab (or any engineered meat for that matter) is another opportunity for profit. The vegan/vegetarian industry will be worth $5 billion by 2020! Even the fast food industry is hopping on the vegan/vegetarian train by offering the Impossible burger in their restaurants. Check out this link to see what Carl's Jr. is doing to cater to the rising demographic of vegan/vegetarian diners. I'm not against going vegan or vegetarian. What is concerning is when industries begin to capitalize on a lifestyle choices. Eventually, the FDA and the meat industry will begin to manipulate policies and products that push their own agenda forward within the vegan/vegetarian industry (if they haven't done so already).
